I never really was a fan of those typical Belgian ales where they have that fruity taste to them. They’re just not my glass of beer. But I gotta say that this Belgian ale from Augustijn is quite good.
Starting right off is the bottle. This is totally different from those that I am used to. I poured this beer into a snifter glass this time to change it up. This beer has HUGE head that was fizzy/foamy and it lasted all the way through the tasting. The carbonation was lively and as the tasting went on it did slow down a bit. The clarity was hazy and it had a goldish/amber color to it.
Leaning over the glass and inhaling a nice deep draw in of the aroma and it is pleasant one with notes of clove and a fruity hint. The first sip of this beer was an alcohol taste with a clove and vanilla hint that was followed by a nice malty finish. The carbonation as I said before is very lively and this active carbonation helps spread the flavors across your palate. The finish of this beer is long with a slight alcohol on the back-end.
I really enjoyed this beer probably because I did not expect to like it. This bottle of beer was given to me by my good friend and neighbor Bill. Thank you, Bill! I would definitely purchase this beer and I recommend this to anyone who loves Belgian beers or who do not like them. Give it a chance. You will be glad that you did.
ABV = 8.0% – on the bottle, 7.5% on the website
Hi Brian,
Tried this beer last night. I agree, there’s a nice balance between malt, hops and alcohol. Picked a nice night to enjoy one too.
