Third Voyage Double IPA – Samuel Adams

Third Voyage IPA

Looks good in the glass, but I may just keep on sailing.

I love a nice flavorful IPA.  I enjoy the fragrant hop aroma, and the taste of the hops.  It is a nice style of beer to have every once in a while. But then, I had a Third Voyage Double IPA from Samuel Adams.

The head on this beer is light brown in color and foamy. It dissipated slowly and lasted throughout the tasting.  It has a copper color, that clarity is clear and the carbonation comes at a medium rate.

The aroma is strong with that of hops.  You pick up the grapefruit notes and the strong citrus from the Cascade hops.  Then I took a sip.  Wow!  The first sip is intense hops – very bitter with a slight malt taste in the background.  This IPA is hopped and is bitter to the point where it is not really enjoyable. The finish is long and all you are left with is a strong hop taste. My palate was offended by the finish.  I could only drink one of these beers as I did not find it refreshing.  I was disappointed because I really wanted to like it.  Now, if you are a hop-head, you may find Third Voyage Double IPA enjoyable.  I found this beer to not be refreshing at all.

I received this beer as part of a Samuel Adams IPA variety pack. I am glad that I was able to try this beer as part of the variety pack, because I would never purchase it again.  But, if you enjoy a strong IPA with an intense finish, then you may enjoy this beer.  Try one and see for yourself.

ABV = 8.0%
