10 is perfection, and is almost unattainable. Anything below a 6 is undrinkable.
Christmas is a fun time of the year when you receive presents and good cheer. My daughter and her boyfriend where kind enough to give me a growler filled with beer – beer from Free Will Brewing Co. that contained their Russian Imperial Stout called Ralphius. Now this is a present that one can really enjoy.
Since this came in a growler, I do not have a picture of the bottle, but it is what’s inside that counts. I poured this stout into a glass and it has a black color, small foamy head that is medium brown in color. Ralphius has little carbonation.
This Russian Imperial Stout has aromas of vanilla and dried stone fruit. It smells wonderful and beckons you to take a sip. The beer has flavors that come in layers. Its starts off with vanilla and dried fruit and caramel. I also get a hint of dark chocolate from the malt. This beer has a strong alcohol presence but it is controlled well the malt sweetness that balances this Russian Imperial Stout. These flavors all work well together. This beer is also barrel aged for a whole year. That’s dedication to crafting and fine stout.
Raplhius is a very good beer that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is one that I intend to have again very soon. If you enjoy Russian Imperial Stouts, this is one I recommend. Dare I say it is a season beer? I do. It is that good.
