Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout – Flying Dog

Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout

Yes, this Oyster Stout is brewed with oysters.

I love oysters.  I enjoy eating them raw most of all. So when a co-worker gave me a bottle of Flying Dog’s Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout, I had to give it a try. This is a stout that is actually brewed with Rappahannock River oysters.

When this stout was poured into the glass, the head was a nice average size, fizzy in appearance and light brown in color.  The head did dissipate quickly during the tasting.  The body color is black and the carbonation is soft.

The aroma of this beer has nice coffee notes with chocolate/dark chocolate right behind it.  I also get hints of toasted malts.  The taste of the Oyster Stout has a nice chocolate upfront along with the coffee.  I also taste a slight burnt taste from the malts that rounded out the beer.  I don’t really taste the oysters in the beer.

See, it's brewed with oysters.

All in all, this is an enjoyable beer to drink.  It goes down easy, has great flavors and the proceeds from the Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout benefit the Chesapeake Bay Oyster Restoration Project.  So while you are drinking a nice flavorful beer, you are helping preserve a wonderful resource.

ABV = 5.5%

  • I drank 3 or 4 of these and strangely found the urge to chase my wife around the house. Coincidence?

    • Not at all, Ken. Give some to your wife and maybe she’ll be chasing you around.
