Overgrown – Otter Creek Brewing

I received a bottle of Overgrown by Otter Creek Brewing as a gifted six-pack.  The style is an American Pale ale so I was looking forward to having this beer. Overgrown has a small, fizzy head that is white in color.  It has a gold color and is hazy in body clarity.  It also has a medium rate of carbonation. The brew has a citrus, spicy and piney-resin aroma with a skunky after-whiff (if that's even a word). I took a taste of Overgrown and was overwhelmed by an intense bitter - very bitter strong hop flavor on my palate.  The taste was resin and a skunk taste that coated my tongue.  The designation of pale ale does not come into my thoughts on this beer. Overgrown is more of an American IPA.  This is an over-hopped beer that is in your face and attacks your tongue.  I am not sure if I received a very bad bottle or if this is was what it was intended to taste like.  I enjoy hoppy beers and strong IPA's, but this one just did not have that enjoyable hop taste.  It was astringent.  I was only able to have 5 sips of this beer and this is the only beer that I ended up pouring down the drain. I had to. If I brewed a beer and it tasted like this, I would dump it and go back and revise my recipe. But I must say, that I may have received a bad bottle. I may have to go and purchase a bottle and try it again even with the chance that it will taste exactly as this on did.  If I ever do, I will have to update this review.
